Technical Specifications

fmSpark requires FileMaker Pro or Advanced 8.5 or higher. fmSpark is optimized for FileMaker Pro or Advanced 9.0 or higher. Certain functions are only available to users of FileMaker Pro or Advanced 9.0 or higher. See Limitations, below. For hosted deployments, FileMaker Server 8.0 or higher is required.

Limitations within FileMaker 8.5

Selection Highlighting

Within FileMaker Pro or Advanced 9.0 or higher, selected items in a list of items will be highlighted. In version 8.5, the selection will still take place but the selected item will not be highlighted. In all cases, you'll still be able to tell which item you've selected because it's Name will appear on the screen.

Here's a comparison between FileMaker 9 and FileMaker 8.5 on the home screen.

In FileMaker 9, the media type and template are highlighted to show which is selected.

In FileMaker 8.5, the media type and template are not highlighted, but you can see the selected media type and template above the list.

Manage Recipients

Also, on Manage Recipients (see Email/ManageRecipients, Labels/ManageRecipients or Letters/ManageRecipients), users with FMv8.5 will not be able to toggle users on and off the list. They will only be able to remove recipients from the list. The Revert buttons can restore the original list.

Here's an example of the difference between Manage Recipients in FileMaker 9 and FileMaker 8.5.

In FileMaker 9, clicking on the recipient's name (Anne Ackerman, in this example) will strike-through their name. They are no longer a recipient, but they remain in the list. Clicking a second time will clear their name and make them a recipient again. Pressing the "Revert List" button will clear all the names and everyone will be a recipient again.

In FileMaker 8.5, clicking on the recipient's name (Anne Ackerman) will remove them from the list. They are no longer a recipient. They cannot be added back individually. Pressing the "Revert List" button will bring any removed recipients back to the list.

HTML Email Preview

HTML email previews cannot be generated within fmSpark in FileMaker 8.5. HTML email preview thumbnail images cannot be created within fmSpark in FileMaker 8.5. All HTML previews will open in your system default external browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, FireFox or Safari). Note: this does not prevent users in FM8.5 from viewing preview thumbnail images that were created by another user in FM9, they just can't generate their own.

Window auto-resize

FileMaker 9 clients can resize windows and the contents of that window will automatically resize to take advantage of the new size. This is similar to the behavior within most applications and websites; if you make the window bigger, the text boxes get bigger or you can see more things.

FileMaker 8.5 clients cannot take advantage of this behavior. Resizing the window will not automatically resize the contents of that window.

Running 8.5 clients along with 9.0 clients

There should be no problem running a mixed environment, some FileMaker 8.5 clients and some FileMaker 9.0 clients. The 9.0 clients will have all their functionality and the 8.5 clients will have the limitations as described above.
